Books by Martha

1.’Ma, He Sold Me For A Few Cigarettes’

Published by Mainstream, May 2008Martha’s first book, Ma, He Sold Me for a Few Cigarettes, was published in trade paperback in 2007 and reached No.1 on the bestseller lists. The mass market paperback edition is now available.

Born a bastard to a teenage mother in the slums of 1950s Dublin, Martha has to be a fighter from the very start.  As her mother moves from man to man, and more children follow, they live hand-to-mouth in squalid, freezing tenements, clothed in rags and forced to beg for food. But just when it seems things can’t get any worse, her mother meets Jackser. Despite her trials, Martha is a child with an irrepressible spirit and a wit beyond her years. She tells the story of her early life without an ounce of self-pity and manages to recreate a lost era in which the shadow of the Catholic Church loomed large and if you didn’t work, you didn’t eat. Martha never stops believing she is worth more than the hand she has been dealt, and her remarkable voice will remain with you long after you’ve finished the last line.

The sequel to Ma, He Sold Me For A Few Cigarettes, was first published in Trade Paperback in September 2008 and is now available in Paperback, priced £6.99.

We rejoin Martha aged thirteen, she is rescued by the courts from the clutches of her evil stepfather, Jackser, and her feckless mother, Sally. After numerous arrests for shoplifting, a judge rules that she is to be sent to a convent school with the instruction that she is to get an education. Her initial relief at escaping the abuse and neglect she suffered at home is, however, short-lived, as she soon realises that there are many forms of cruelty in this life. As she says, ‘You can have a full belly, but your heart can be very empty.’ Ostracised by the other children for being a ‘street kid’ and put to back-breaking work by the nuns, she leads a lonely existence, her only joy coming from the books she devours and her mischievous sense of humour.

Desperate for love and a little place where she feels she belongs, despite all that she has suffered Martha retains her compassion for others and still continues to hope for a brighter future when she will be free to make her own way in life.

This book is now available to buy and went straight into the Irish bestseller lists at No. 5

Martha returns and when she comes face to face with the evil, psychotic Jackser, she can no longer suppress the nightmares of her childhood.

During her vigil she is joined by Charlie, her beloved little brother, then the ma and some of her other siblings.  All of them have suffered greatly and it is clear that no one connected to Jackser has escaped unscathed.

But as she sits with him during his dying days, other memories of Jackser come back to Martha – fleeting moments of concern and kindness, and a sense of closeness as he recalled his own tormented past in one of Ireland’s industrial schools.  It is a vicious cycle of cruelty and loss that has played out, from which only her own tenacity and wit has provided an escape.

Poignant, ribald, poetic and defiant, with its resolution of many unanswered questions about her life this is Martha at her best.

    Hi
I have just finished reading “Ma, he sold me for a few cigarettes.
What a book, Martha childhood if it can be called that was horrific and it is unimaginable it was on 58 years ago in a so called civilized country.
Could not put the book down & read it in one day.
Looking forward to the sequel though from blurb it sounds like nothing much has changed.
    Regards S.P.

Just finished ‘Ma, he sold me for a few cigarettes’. I couldnt put book down, what a shocking revelation of a poor girl so young and vunerable. Just wanted to take her in myself and care for her and look after poor Charlie too. I think alot of people can relate to some factors whether povety or domestic violence. The extent of the abuse that Martha received was horrific. I am absorbed and willing poor Martha on, Sept is a long time to wait to see how here journey continues. What a remarkable person !

Jenny, No doubt you now read Martha’s 2nd and 3rd book. This child taught me humour and inner belief can conquer all. She made me laugh until I cried and she made me cry until my heart felt empty not being able to reach out and help her.
Your right, her book somehow connects with us all. I hope your like me and hungry for her next revelations. Jax.

What an amazing story I was completely hooked. The courage and wit shown by Martha was outstanding – she had such maturity for one so young. There is so much praise and admiration for her I could go on and on. I was left wondering what happened between going off to boarding school and to writing the book, what happened to Jackser and Sally and all the other children – especially little Charlie? I am so pleased to hear there is a sequel on the way and I CANNOT wait! Write fast please Martha!

What a lady. How can anyone who suffered like Martha did, pull out such wit and comedy. She made me cry but she made me laugh out loud too. A truly amazing lady. I was devastated when I finished the book. Please write quickly Martha.

Have just finished reading this fantstic book i could not put it down and im so pleased that there is a sequel cant wait to read it.
This Book shows how far people can come after such difficult childhoods Marth Long is a inspiration to everybody and the way the book was written was both harrowing and comical. I have read many books on children growing up in terrible circumstances but have never been so touched by this ladies plight.
I am desperate to find out about the other children i hope they have
come through this like Martha has

  7. dee delany-stevens May 30, 2008 at 3:11 pm #

my comments much the same as everyone elses, I only hope that the aul bastard died roaring – waiting to get the sceond book to find out.

I found the book very disturbing in that the lives of those poor children was so badly damaged by an insane power freak – allowed to put the fear of God into a woman and her children. What’s worse is there was very little intervention from anyone to help save these children.

Unfortunately such things are still happening to children across the world at the hands of their elders who they should be looking up to for guidance and comfort.

Anyway well done Mrs for getting through the hell and sharing your story with us. I hope through this book we will open our eyes whenever we see children (and adults) been mistreated.

Here in as far away as Australia we have enjoyed this book, I can’t wait for the 2nd one. It has made me appreciate my life even more, just the little things like fresh bread, and having clean sheets. I hope your life is full and enriched now Martha and you can enjoy how life was mean’t to be lived. How is Charlie?, I can’t stop thinking about him. I can’t believe your grandmother did nothing to help her grandchildren. It’s hard to believe but even today a lot of Aboriginal children are living that life. Mum and Dad are drunk and there is no food. Good on you Martha for being so strong and having the courage to write this book. I’ve already ordered the next one.

What can I say. A truly amazing, brutal, horrific story. What a courageous young lady, having to grow up way before her time and suffering what most of us can’t even begin to imagine. Martha I take my hat off to you. You made me cry, but I also have complete admiration for you. Well done for coming through it all. I hope your abusers, especially your mother, are paying for what they put you though

Thank you for sharing your life with us. For a person who got nothing you are still giving. I hate to say that I would have been one of those who would have looked the other way if I saw somone like you walking towards me. Your book has made it’s mark on me. You are such a courageous fighter and an inspiration to us all. I hope Charlie and yourself find some happiness and nothing gave me more hope than to see you dedicated your book to your children. My fingers are crossed for you and it goes without saying that I’m just waiting for your next book to hit the shelves.

    Dear Martha

One half of me wants to thank you for writing this book. The other half of me can’t imagine what you have endured in your life but, you have come through all the pain to be strong enough to pass your account of early life onto others. I am having a bit of an unsettled time in my life at present but, you are a true inspiration to carry on with steely determination and not give up. Your book shall remain in my thought for a long time and I will be honoured to read your future books. Thank you Martha!

I look forward to the sequel and I hope that you will continue to write until we know just what happened to you throughout your life. Please let us know what happened to Charlie and I do hope you were reunited with him. You were an amazing child, I don’t think I would have survived you childhood. Thanks for sharing this with us

    Hi Martha,
I have just finished your book and I am dying to read your next book, the way you wrote about your siblings and how patient you were with them, made me realise that being the older daughter in the family is not always an easy task, but that the younger ones do appreciate what we do.I am the eldest girl in my family with two kids and two teenage siblings who drive me up the wall and I’m only 20!But your experience has made me feel so grateful and lucky,I am just thankful for you sharing your experience,I’ll never look at butter the same again!!!!!!!!!Thank you so much, and I hope and pray that your siblings are in good health just as you are, because I know in my heart you came out in the right side of the tunnel, publishing this book is evidence to that!SO THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for sharing your life experience with us, its priceless, have just finished reading your second book, it was awesome….you are truly an inspiration to life by never giving up, your strong spirit… I had many a laugh with your thoughts in your head about the nuns and some of the girls there, your compassion you showed to the younger children and at last when you turned 16 and could open a new door to begin your adult world and leave behind all the hurt you felt…your determination to make something of yourself…it was truly amazing, an absolute must read, thank you once again…unforgettably perfect..

Your life has affected me so much and made me realize that my glass is full in life. You have also made me want to help others, especially our innocent children who are not as fortunate, not only with food, but with love. Their souls need to be fed. There was a reason for your story to be available to the public, you have touched me in such a way. I want to do what ever I can to prevent child abuse and neglect. Your story is for sure a mind opener for alot of people.
May god be with you and your wonderful family.

Just finished your second book, dived on to the computer and am excited that there is a third book yet to come. I don’t like the sound of the title, I was hopeing life would be kinder to you after all you have suffered. The first two books were a harrowing read but well worth it.I look at scruffy, unkept children with a different view now and will never turn a blind eye. I’m driving everyone made with my aussie irish accent and cursing every one who annoys me (under my breath !)Can’t wait for the next episode Dianne.

  37. Debbie Joh October 28, 2008 at 4:52 pm #

I have read the first 2 books, never have I read something so shocking. What you Martha endured in your childhood is incomprehensible. I am anxiously awaiting Ma, I’m in the madhouse, I just want to know what happened to the other bairns, especially poor Charlie and to know if life finally treated you kindly. I hope The Jackser fella is now somewhere suffering(God forgive me) as he made you suffer but then I suppose he wouldn’t think for one moment that he deserved anything bad. Your mother obviously needed some kind of help, as we are all aware in those days there was none. I just cannot believe that people could see how badly cared for you and your siblings were and something not done about it. Far to often a blind eye is turned. Martha, you have my admiration for your strength, your ability to keep a sense of humour(which, evoked a few giggles) and for your survival. God Bless you, hun, I hope the rest of your life is very, very happy. I can’t think of anyone who deserves it more. What an inspiration you are

  38. carole Tudor October 29, 2008 at 3:22 pm #

I’ve never known a young girl to be taken advantage of by so many men and people her little life, it really did cut me to read and then there was times when I actually giggled.
As for that horrid Jacksir he should be hanged and quartered for what he did to those kids.
Hope I have the strength to go on in my life Go Girl Martha!
    God be with you always

    Oh Martha
    What a read.
I read Ma he sold me…and could not put it down. What a terrible childhood.
Although very sad ,at times you had me “in stitches”.
I live in Dublin and could follow you footsteps through the city.
I have since read the 2nd book and it too was remarkable.
Cant wait for the 3rd one and as many that come aftr that.
It would be nice to hear how the rest of the family got through life.

You seem to have found some happiness now and you truly deserve it.
    Take Care and keep writing

I’m going overseas in a few days and I bought ‘Ma, I’m gettin meself a new mammy’ several days ago to read on the plane but I haven’t started reading it yet because I would finish it before I even left, I just found this sight and found out that ‘Ma, he sold me for a few cigarettes’ is actually the first one. Now I’m gonna have to go out and buy it before I go. It’s very difficult not to start reading it now though. They look really good, but I feel sorry for Martha.

I am just finished Marthas’ second book and its amazing but horrific at the same time. Martha you are an inspiration to us all. You put up with the worst things life could throw at anyone and yet you seem to hold your head up high and get on with things. Your life in the convent was something that none of us could ever deal with and would not happen in Society in this day and age. I am dying to read the third book and am so looking forward to finding out how things panned out in your life. I hope for the love of God that Charlie and the rest of your brothers and sisters managed to survive life with your mother and Jackser (may he rot in hell). For Martha, I do hope that you have had a happy life and there is light at the end of the tunnel. A pure inspiration.

Ma, He Sold Me for a Few Cigarettes is a poignant and painful trip down memory lane for Martha, who spent her childhood years in squalid living conditions and extreme poverty, she also introduces Jackser, her stepfather to her story and gives detailled and shocking accounts of the abuse she suffered.

This is a very interesting book which somnetimes shocks. I learnt a lot about what it was like in 1950’s Dublin. I myself have and will continue to make trips to Ireland.

Brillant book i couldnt put it down. I grew up in the fifties but this book certainly opened my eyes. I knew there was poverty, but am shocked at the extent and the horrific life martha had. Really funny though and bought the next one, cant wait for a follow up.

  55. berni murphy carlow February 5, 2009 at 7:07 pm #

Well Martha, as a native as inner city Dublin, I recognised a lot of the places you lived your poor life in the first book, I still to this day pass these places and think of you (nothing much has changed) there are still kids like you scurrying around hungary and waiting for the da to come outta the pub or the dole office 😦 Your next book was just as hard hitting except to you the torture of the convent was like a little cushion to you after the horrible cold and hungary childhood you had, yet in your childhood you had a certain amount of physical love from Charlie and your mother hugs etc but in the convent there was nothing, I think you would have traded your hot dinner for a cuddle. Looking forward to your next and next and next book.

Fair play to you Martha Long, you are some woman. No one should have to go through in their whole life what you went through in your childhood. I am just in the middle of reading your second book and hoping that the bandy oul bastard gets what he deserves by the end of it. Please keep up the writing as you have a talent that thankfully they did not suppress. I hope many good fortunes come your way in the future and you live a peaceful, healthy, happy and long life.

Eeh, me poor little bairn. Where were all the real “do gooders” when you & Charlie really needed them. When I finished the book (which my friend loaned to me) I thought, thats it then, my friend said there has to be a follow up, thank God there is. I cant begin to imagine the suffering you went through Martha and then to be so brave to write about it, it must have felt like a cleansing for you (and hopefully some way of healing), I am not daft I know awful things happen in this world, but when you write so graphically and the reader feels like they know you and want to help you, we feel so useless. I cant believe there really is a Mother like yours on this earth, is she still alive? An as other people have commented has Jackser died roarin? I hope you have found love, peace, health & happiness in your life now Martha. God Bless you and I thank you with all my heart. (I was born in Sunderland UK 1959 and moved to Aussie in 1974, am going back for my early 50th birthday and actually get to visit ireland, I cant wait to walk down the streets you write about)

    Dear Martha,
I haven’t quiet finished “Ma, he sold me for a few cigarettes” but your story has moved me to tears. I hope you children are making up for all the love and care you were deprived of in your childhood. As a mother I can’t believe your mother didn’t protect you from the abuse you had to suffer. There is real evil in this world, unfortunately there are millions of vulnerable children suffering neglect and abuse today. I realise and appreciate the privelaged life I had growing up in Ireland only a decade later and I hope to teach my children to give to the less fortunate. My daughter looks at me funny when I call her Mrs. All the best and congratulations on the success of your books. Going out to the shops now to buy the second book.

OMG WHAT A BOOK. JUST FINISHED READING “MA HE SOLD ME FOR A FEW CIGARETTES”. WHEN I STARTED TO READ IT THE BED WAS ROCKING FROM LAUGHTER. I THOUGHT IT WAS A COMEDY. BUT VERY SOON IT BECAME CLEAR THAT THIS WAS NO COMEDY. I MUST SAY THERE WERE TIMES THAT I FELT WOULD HAVE TO STOP READING AS IT WAS TOO DEPRESSING TO READ. I HAVE READ MOST OF THE BOOKS WRITTEN BY ABUSED CHILDREN BUT THIS WAS RELENTLESS IN ITS ABUSE. I FELT WORSE ABOUT THE MOTHER “SALLY” THAN I DID ABOUT “JACKSER”. HE WAS ONLY AN “EVIL IGNORAMOUS” BUT HER, HOW COULD SHE HAVE ALLOWED THIS TO HAPPEN TO WHAT I CAN ONLY CALL DESCRIBE AS A “FANTASTIC CHILD”. I KEPT READING IN THE HOPE THAT HER LOT HAD IMPROVED AND CRIED IN THE END WHEN IT HAD NOT. I JUST GOOGLED AND DISCOVERED SHE HAS A CONTINUATION THANKS BE TO GOD. HOPEFULLY THINGS WILL IMPROVE FOR HER IN THAT.I WAS ALSO SICK WITH WORRY ABOUT CHARLIE AND WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO HIM FOR THE NEXT FOUR AND A HALF YEARS.

i know i am just about to sound like everyone else writing reviews of your amazing story but i felt compelled to write here. I started reading your book and immediatly was dragged into ireland and felt as though i was living the terrible life with you. I often read these types of stories but this is the first story like this i have read since becoming a mother about six months ago. i was moved to tears at the thought of a mother doing these terrible things to her own children and the life you went through. I fell in love with charlie and when you escaped from jackser and went to england in the first book i had to skip so many pages until you came back to dublin because i couldn’t concentrate on anything except how poor charlie and the other children were coping with life without you. I couldn’t believe it when i got to the end of the story this morning and still didn’t find out how everyone survived and what happened. I got straight on to the internet to try and find out if there was another book and dragged my poor baby out to try and find it! i’m so far not succesful at getting my hands on it but i am desperate so i will order a copy on line.

  67. Louella June 5, 2009 at 12:45 pm #

Like others, I just finished reading ‘Ma he sold me for a few cigarettes’. I’m only 14, and I was horrified and inspired by the book. I though ‘God this is such a terrible book’ not because it was bad or anything but of all the things she went through, but still I HAD to finish it. It is truly amazing. I agree with everybody, she was a very funny little girl who has massive courage. It’s funny I didn’t cry too much but I really had a lot of empathy for Martha. I really felt sad in those tiny moments where she left ‘Flo’ and later ‘James’ because they were really kind people. It’s just so amazing, it’s felt like anything could happen to her at any moment, but the fact that she stayed strong and grew up and shared all her childhood with us is AMAZING. It really puts me in awe. I can’t wait to read the second ‘Ma, I’m gettin meself a new mammy”. and I was wondering if there was a third book or the second was renamed or something. I heard of “Ma, I’m locked up in the Mad house” and I wasn’t sure.

  68. Louella June 5, 2009 at 12:53 pm #

I also just wanted to say how much I grew to really love Martha’s character. I just wanted to hug her and tell her everything was okay, that I would be like family to her. No one should be treated like that, NO ONE. And to think this goes on everyday, Martha is truly inspirational. And I cried when they came back and Charlie was so sad. I was just bawling all through it, It must have been so hard for her tho write this book.

  69. sonyia June 13, 2009 at 5:18 am #

i loved both the books and would really love to know what happened next, with martha and her brothers and sisters and i hope her ma and that bastard get whats coming to them, i just can not stop thinking about it all and would love to have the story continue, you are a great story teller and i hope everything worked out for you in life, your book has made me look at people differently and i am now more open and loving to people i don’t even know, thanks you very much for this experience
    sonyia 🙂

I have read both books and am absolutely hooked. Most definately the best read i have ever had. After reading “Ma he sold me for a few cigarettes”, i was in my bookstore and by accident found “Ma, I’m gettin Meself a new mammy” and yelled with joy at my find, much to other shoppers amusement! I can not wait for the 3rd book to be released. What an amazing and tragic life to have lived. I hope the next book informs us of what happened to all the other siblings. I laughed and cried through out both books. Martha you are inspiring and i hope there are many more books to come. xxx

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your first two books Martha and I cannot wait to start the third, what you went through over those years must have been awful for you, I could not believe how your mother chose to turn a blind eye and allow these awful things to happen to you and your siblings, but i guess now you are a stronger and courageous woman and have lived to tell the tale. I myself am married with three young kids, I came from a family of two parents both alcoholics and found myself asking for help from strangers just so i could feed myself and my brothers and sister. I have shared some similar experiences as you have but nothing as bad as yours and I am now a much stronger person but will never forget my childhood – not so many happy memories but i am happy now. Thank you for sharing your story with us and please keep up the good work x

  92. Melissa January 1, 2010 at 9:34 am #

I have just finished your Ist book – Ma, He sold Me for a Few Cigarettes.
I could not put it down and loved the way the diction of your speech was so a part of how the book was written.
I was born in the mid sixties a long way from Dublin, and while tragedy was so much a part my family it was I feel was nothing like yours – as like you I think a sense of who you are and humour always made you go on. I will read your next two books and as another woman I am very curious and excited to see how your life went from 11yrs old , and to become a mother. Your book portays you as a person with a lot of love in your heart and I am looking forward to see how it comes back to you. As your dedication in the first book is to your children , you seem to have had love returned to you and I hope a life that you so much deserved.
    xx

Like all the others i could not put this book down. It brought out so many emotions from laughter, anger, sadness, the horror of a childs experience in 1950’s Dublin I so wanted to wrap my arms around Martha keeping her safe and warm

    Dear Martha,

I just finished the third book and you speak for so many of us. Even those of us who were born after that time. Emotions I buried and only brought to the surface every so often came rushing back. Things I didn’t want to think about came back with a vengence. Not sure if thats a good or bad thing but I do hope your life became a happy and safe place to be. Thank you Martha for the courage to put into words what alot of us can relate to and to make us feel that … we can surive the horrors of our childhood and young adult years.. and espically feel that we are not alone. God Bless you and keep you safe.. Look forward to your fourth book.

    Martha,
At last I have found a website or place where I could write and say how much I enjoyed your books – though I cried many tears reading, I laughed so much at your wit. You are an inspiration. I loved your courage and determination that you were going to lift yourself out of whatever got you down. You were a beautiful person when you were a child and I’m sure even more so now. I hope you are at peace and like another poster said, I’d love to have cared for you had I been around in those times. I have two girls of my own and would die for them. It’s so sad there are others like you were still suffering. Your first book made me want to reach out to and help children like yourself. I have done some stuff like give clothes etc to the women’s refuge but it’s hard to really get to those others who nobody seems to care about. I look forward to more books from you Martha. God bless you and your family.

I have just completed your first book and I have cried, laughed and screamed out loud at your journey as a young child. I will be encouraging, no, making friends, family and colleauges read this book as I feel that this story is one that needs to be heard by all. You are an inspiration Martha and I look forward to reading the next two installments….

Just finished reading the second book and am looking forward to the third.
I have read so many books of this genre, not all of them rang true to me.
So many authors seemed to have jumped on the band wagon after a A Child Called ‘It’ was published, but this heartbreaking story certainly rings true to me and I can`t wait for any that follow, mainly to find out how Martha gets a chance in life, and hopefully to learn something about what happened to the rest of her family.

  104. Janice Woods February 8, 2010 at 1:10 pm #

    Hi Martha.
My name is Janice and i was born in the 1950,s in Australia to a
Aboriginal mother and white father. My father left and then we had the alcholic stepfather. Like yourself we starved and never
had any where decent to live. Our clothes also were rags.
Isn.t it funny how society used to look down on poor neglected children, and treat them like they were dirt, not to mention how they treated our mother because she was aboriginal. But anywhere i just wanted to say, i truly thought you are a very brave woman to share your story with the rest of the world, and thank goodness we live in a better world to day. May the rest of your life be peacefull, and keep up the wonderfull writing.

    Hello Martha,
If you do ever read these many messages left for you, I just wanted to say thank you for sharing the start of your life with us all. It broke my heart to read, but I only carried on knowing that you were okay because you make it through life to tell your story.
I didn’t realise you had written a second book until I googled your name, I’ve never really done that for an author but I like all the others wanted to know that you were okay and I’m very happy to learn that you became a mother yourself.
I wish you and your children and all those that matter to you in your life all the very best for now and the future.

    Dear Martha

I read “Ma, he sold me…” last year when I visited London and found it to be one of the most powerful books I have ever read. My 21 yr old at the time, cried for you and your siblings. At home again, I looked you up and got book 2 through Amazon and waitied eagerly for word of the third. I visited Dublin in February and recognized some of the streets, we walked O’Connell Street, visited Clery’s and walked along the Liffey. While in Dublin, I picked up your third and read it when I got home and the anger it stirred in me at the nuns and the Irish middle class makes me want to thump my kids for not appreciating what they have. I am waiting to hear what happens to you afterwards. Keep on writing, we need to know what happens to both you and Charlie.

  117. suzette April 4, 2010 at 3:44 am #

This has to be the most disturbing read I have ever experienced, actually affecting my every thought at the moment. As others have said, they enjoyed the book and couldn’t put it down once started, well I have found the opposite. The fact that this is a true account of Martha’s young life is making it difficult for me to read any more then a few pages at a time. I read at night and Martha’s story is actually keeping me awake just visualising her years growing up with this monster Jackser and a mother almost as bad. This is a horrific story and how anyone could survive is just beyond me. And like other readers, poor little Charlie, where is he now? I am almost at the end of this first account of Martha’s life and I keep flicking the pages forward to see if there is any fairytale ending but what I am reading is that the nightmare continues. My heart is forever scarred by this story.

  118. Zahra Anderson April 11, 2010 at 3:34 pm #

The only problem with your books, Martha, is that I can’t put them down and get on with my daily duties. I’ve just finished your third one, and I am totally involved in your life, rooting for you and wanting you to succeed. I am sure you have, and I am waiting for the books that share that part of your life with us.
When young people have a loving family etc. they soooo much take it for granted. I suggest you start doing school visits to share your experiences with young people and help them get a perspective on their own lives. I think you would be an extremely successful inspirational speaker at schools.
    All the best to you.
    Zahra

i’ve read all three books and have the fourth on pre-order. Martha, your life haunts me (and that of your siblings especially Charlie, i can’t get the images of this poor little uncared for boy running along holding the pram going nowhere,or of when he opens the door to you when you come back from england, out of my mind). It all makes me want to tell my 3 children over and over how much i love them. We’re all just waiting for a happy ending. i just drink it all in knowing that we’ll get the answers, i hope they are the right ones and that it is a happy ending. i wonder did our paths ever cross? my parents both lived in north dublin inner city tenements in the 50s during their early childhoods. I’d love to have a coffee in cafolla’s with you…(reminds me of the Mayfair Grill in O’Connell St) but i’d say the fan queue is very long. I hope you can now enjoy your comforts, roaring warm fires, fries, endless cups of tea……. You are a real Hero xxx ps I saw that you mentioned that your daughter Tina has a son called Charlie…I hope its not in memory of your brother…….

  121. karen June 30, 2010 at 11:15 am #

I have just minutes ago finished your first book and am overwhelmed with emotion at your story….what a terrible time you had in Dublin all those years ago. My heart ached for you and Charlie and the the other childre all the way thru but at times you had me laughin with your mad irish wit with your bold ways and crackin sense of humour….be jaysus, how you still had your sense of humour while sufferin so much is beyond me. Like other readers I hoped to find out that Jackser had died a horrible death for the things he put you and them kids thru…. I am a mother of 2 myself and think Sally wasnt fit to look after herself never mind 5 kids. She let you down so much by not protecting you from tha bandy auld evil b*stard, you deserved so much more than you got. I sincerely hope that writing your books has healed your heart and your life is full of everthing you lacked in your childhood…hugs and kisses, plenty of delicious food and nice clean clothes…and above all, people around you that love you and protect you from the horrors of this world. Cant wait to read the next 2 books and carry on your journey with your irish accent singin in me head…i have my fingers crossed that you, dear Charlie and the other poor childre are released from the grips of them animals you called parents….sending you lots of love and many thanks for sharing your story.

    Hi Martha,

I’ve read all 3 of your books and like all the others that have read them, I could not stop reading. I took your first book with me on a two week vacation and walking into a book store and found your second and third book. Within a couple of days, I’d read all 3!
I just hope your life has changed from your childhood, because if anyone deserves a better life is you. I just can’t fathom why your mother did not protect you and your siblings??? I hope your brother Charlie survived the abuse from that monster Jackser.
I also pleased to read that you have children of your own. I know that you would be a wonderful mother and ensured that your children would not ever live a day not knowing that you love them.
I wish you contentment, happiness and a life full of love, hugs and kisses. God bless you.

With school holidays coming up I found your book in ouir staffroom book club selection and so far have done none of my holiday jobs!!Like all those before me, your book has left me agonizing over your fate. I finished it last night and am today looking you up on the net! Never have I bothered to do this before. I shall be searching out the next ones to see how your life proceeded.
I grew up in the fifties outside London an only child of a widowed mother and at times things were difficult but never ever anything like your experiences.
I hope and pray that you have a wonderful life now and I am sure you have provided a warm loving family home for your own children.
Sharing this with us all must have been so difficult. The younger generation seem to think life has dealt them a raw deal if they don’t get a trip to Bali when “all” their friends are going or a Billabong T-shirt instead of one from K’Mart. Not having food day after day or going round in rags is something they would never believe could happen.
I look forward to hearing of your success and happiness! Many big hugs,
    Cath

    Hi martha,

By now I have read all of your 4 books. As i read them i felt a strong rage towards the people that had hurt you so much and left you scars in life which take so much effort to remove. I believe that somebody like you is very unique as not many of us would be able to stand what you have in life and for that you should look at yourself with great pride. You have made it through so much bad stuff but have successfully grown into a great women and give many others hope out there when you share your story. I hope that life has turned out better for you then you hoped for as you truly deserve every bit of it.

I would love it if you came to australia for book signing if it is ever possible

All the best to you and your family, take care of yourself and know that you have inspired many people in the world

  132. sue stevenson September 7, 2010 at 11:37 am #

Martha,no words of mine can express how I am feeling reading the first and second books in the ‘Ma’ series. I had a very strict Father and although he was ‘handy’ with his hands, compared to the life you suffered he was a pussy cat. I really think that this book should be on every Secondary School book shelf. After all it only 50 years ago, things have changed so much since then……………or have they?????
Just going to begin the third book, I do hope that we find out about Charlie is this book.
I hope now that you are so happy that the heart that was broken so many times is now bursting with love and contentment. To your children I say,”You have a wonderful woman as your Mum, always treasure her as she treasures you”
    With every good wish

  135. Anne Hubbard September 23, 2010 at 2:43 pm #

I have just read Martha’s last book and have read all four in a month.I could not put them down. What a lady she is and will never understand how she came through it all.How cruel can some people iff you can call them that to put children through so much brutality and neglect. They will certainley have to answer to someone iff not in this life then the next.I am also wanting to know what happened to her siblings. Her last book had such a sad ending that I hope she will be writing more up to who and where she is today. It was as someone said so dam tragic in parts yet so funny in others. As I was reading them I wanted to take her in my arms and keep her warm and let her know that I would have loved her and taken on her siblings as well.Telling our loved ones we love them each day and just a hug means more than all the money in the world.I lost my only son for years ago and unless anyone has lost a child no one knows what it is like.I made lots of mistakes bringing up my children as we all do.I always loved them and made sure they were fed and clean and warm.My biggest belief is that the Catholic Church have to change the rules on married priests as they are being stopped from what comes natural to most men.I know it is their choice when they go into it but it is all wrong.I admire this lady so much and would love tomeet her for a chat.Well done Martha and enjoy your money you make from these books. You deserve every penny of it.

OMG i am still reeling with emotions of every kind from the first book…. I wanted to scoop all the children up and take them home to love, feed and care for them all, especially Martha.A child that was never a child by the sounds of it and what courage and intelligence and humour amongst all the horror of her life did she have! When i finished the book i felt down because i wanted to know what happened to Martha and Charlie but equally i needed to know that Jackser had suffered some terrible fate!!!I am definately getting the sequel asap

I promised myself I would never read another Poor, Drunken Irish, Catholic book again after Angela’s Ashes and a few others, but I really, well I was going to say enjoyed Ma, he sold me for a few cigarettes, but that’s not the word, actually there probably is no word to describe reading your book,I am still haunted. The images I conjured up while reading, probably don’t even come close to reality. I am so ANGRY…

    • Bridget January 5, 2011 at 12:15 pm #

I am on the 4th book about half way through. I am going around the house calling my daughter Missus amd my son young fella and Jaysus look at the state of ya. I am a culchie by the way but married to a northsider. They think I have totally lost it being 2 Aussies. I love the Dublin humour in the book. I didn’t recommend the first book to anyone because I was also very disturbed by the book and I had nightmares. Yes I am angry life is cruel and is for millions of children worldwide today but I hope Ireland has improved I don’t think the Nuns would get away with it today. I consider myself very lucky. I went to a convent school and I have to say the Nuns were nothing compared to the Nuns in the second book and were good people. Thanks Martha

it seems i am a bit late to discover this book (it was lying around my mothers house and the title caught my eye) I have just finished Ma, He sold me… and am off to the bookshop to buy the next one in the morning.

What an unbelieveable start to life Martha Long had, my heart broke for her on every page. She had sense beyond her years and love in her heart for anyone that would give her even an ounce of compassion. God forgive me but I hope tha oul bastard got his cumuppance – he was rotten to the core and i’m sure he is toasting away nicely down below.

Hats off to you Martha , u really are an inspiration. Let all the moaning Michaels out there read this story and put every thing in to perspective for them.

    You are a true heroine.

    Martha,

I just want to go out there and give you a big hug…you are fantastic women to go through all you went through. You remind me of myself at times the way you are so resilient and courageous you are! However I did not have an awful step father like you had, to live in constant fear must have being awful. I’m so glad you are writing these books because it changed my life and my view of other people. I live in inner city Dublin, not too far from Summerhill but I’m originally from the west of Ireland. But i look at those kids a lot different! Im so sorry you went through all that pain growing but Im sure your life has changed a lot now. I just want to say that I admire you so much and please keep up the good work. You are an inspiration to us all!
P.S I’m telling all my friends about your book, I only read the first but I’m going to go and read all your books as I’m dying to hear what happens to the rest of the family. Love Catherinexx

Wow, what a wonderful read. I had so many different emotions whlie reading Ma,he sold me for a few cigretts. The book was given to me by a freind. I had to get online a find out if there are any more books by you.
I always thought I had a sad childhood, but as my Mum said:- there is always someone worsr off than you!! Very true. I hope you have had a better adulthood.
Looking forward to reading the next book.

  154. CDel July 5, 2011 at 5:10 pm #

I have only read the first book “cigarettes”. It was so graphic and it drew me in to her sad world. I am ordering her other two books now. I want to see what happens to her. It is amazing what people go through and come out the other side of. She is an amazing author. I hope they make a film of Martha’s life. What a strong child she was. Read it, it’s one of the best I have ever had the pleasure of reading.

  155. Damien July 6, 2011 at 11:27 am #

    Martha,
Congratulations on a wonderful read.. It is such a heartrending story,, unbelievable that you had to endure such suffering and abuse.
I hope you can forgive those who made life so miserable for you especially Jackser.
Looking forward to your next book.

  161. chris wright October 4, 2011 at 6:26 am #

Dear Martha, Oh my god how this world makes me cringe. I often wonder why on earth we are here, what is the lesson that we are to learn. I work in the field of mental health and see the effects of child abuse. I just hope what people say is true and that god will provide justice in the end. For all of you out there who have, or are suffering, hold on, like Martha do not let them win by taking your spirit. Love to everyone!

    Hello Martha,
I have just finished reading Ma, Ive got myself locked up in the Mad House.

Hi, I have just finished your latest book, I am relieved that you got yourself back on track at that time. All your books have been such intense reading, I have gone through emotions of disgust, crying, laughter and anguishes. You are a very strong person, I do not know how you have survived, physically or mentally, over the years from your hard and abusive, up bringing. I am sure most of us today would have given up long before. I just cannot wait for the next book and to know whether you find true love in your life. When oh when will it be in the shops ?

Just finished ma, he sold me for a few cigarettes. This book would never have been my first choice but was passed on to me by a family member. Never before have I read a book that made me cry, just wanted to dive into the pages and pull Martha and Charlie out and save them from the abuse. Martha you are a brave soul, your abuse was relentless, how you found the courage to get through it all I will never know.

Martha, started reading your 1st book that was gifted to my 18 year old daughter who’s not much of a reader. Enjoyed it thoroughly, probably due mainly to the parallels personally experienced. Growing up in NZ I never starved due mainly to the abundance of food in paddocks, the local rivers & beaches as well as neighbours back yards, but I certainly remember the torture & abuse, the cold & the squalor as well as the torment from other kids. How the corporal punishment meted out at school was laughable i comparison. Character building for certain, you’re a kindred spirit for sure. Would love to shake your hand, keep up the good work!

I have just finished book 4 and am now about to add book 5 to my kindle and all i can say is wow what a read! Your books are fantastic, I have laughed, cried, cried some more and fell for Ralph with you. I have now passed book 1 to my mum and she is hooked, we both want to kill Jackser and adopt you and your siblings!. My mum is from Ireland and remembers many of the streets and locations you mention and understands how tough it was on the streets in those days. My heart goes out to you, I had a fabulous childhood and will always appreciate it, and it makes me so sad that you hardly had a glimps of love and affection that comes from a good family. You are a remarkable person with a great character and i hope the future is more promising. So looking forward to book 5! 🙂

What a lady, I can not find words that would be good enough to describe this lady. I went through every emotion with her, I laughed with her and cried for her. Martha and her brothers and sisters were on my mind day and night. I admire you and a lot, lot more. 🙂

  184. Janine Harris February 5, 2012 at 9:23 pm #

hi martha….i just wanted to let you know how much of an inspiring person you are. all through school i barely picked up a book to bring home and read. my sisters friend passed on your first book to my ma (as she is from dublin so she would be able to relateto it and she also told her it was a great read) however i happend to read a few pages of it first and was hooked instantly i COULD NOT put it down…. (almost walkin into lamposts on my way to work whilst reading haha) me and my ma would talk about your book for hours at a time to see who was furthest but not give anything away it made us laugh our heads off but also cry our eyes out at same time… all my family r from dublin but i was born in england dublin is home to home for me so it was easy to picture u in my mind and read it in the dublin accent this really gripped me. we are currently on your 3rd book and are still as excited as the first we cant wait to read more,,,,you are such an interestin character thanks for sharing your story 😀

Wow, what an insight of another person life – I am sure that many people can relate to some of the experiences of Martha in different ways, which is very sad. But, like Martha’s courage, she’s pulling through – and changing her cycle of life. Well done for your strenght and perserverence Martha.

  200. penny June 16, 2012 at 5:24 am #

Martha, thank you for your story. I bought all 5 at one go recently in a bookstore in Melbourne and I’m nearly finished book 4. So many familiar places all came back to me. I was born in Whitehall, Dublin in 1945 and regularly went shopping in the city with my Mam and was probably one of the little girls you saw with an ice-cream cone from Woolworths all dressed up in my best dress and black patentleather sandals. I wish you well and hope your life is good and you are at peace with your memories.

I have only just found Martha’s first book “Ma he sold me for a few cigarettes”.

I cannot tell you the effect it had on me. The cruelty inflicted on Martha is absolutely tragic. No child deserves a childhood (if you can call it that) like that. Words fail me, my heart bleeds for her. I will be reading the next book in the series. I pray that Martha is now getting all the happiness she deserves and that life will be good for her. God bless you Martha.

I read your book on holiday 2012 and cried many times whilst reading it. You are an amazing woman to have survived after all the kicks and beatings you received from that beast Jackser. I am off out to buy Book 2 now. How did the authorities not do something about it when you were hospitalised?

  212. Gail Robertson November 3, 2012 at 11:34 am #

Dear Martha, I have read all six of your “Ma” books. I could not put them down. You have shared your life with us your readers. Your journey is indeed a remarkable one. I wish you health, happiness and most of all love. Have your three children read your books? Does Sarah visit you? I hope one day you are able to come to Australia. I will be looking forward to your next book and hope it will tell us that you have found the happiness you so richly deserve. Thank you

  213. Zereen Nisha Waniya December 6, 2012 at 1:18 am #

    Dear Martha,
I bought your book at the airport a couple of weeks ago. I was in tears on every second page I read. I was right inside that little sad Martha; I felt every bit of your pain. As each chapter I turned to I thought things will finally get better for you, but I was sad to see that the end of the book had another beginning for you to an unknown territory. After completing this book I thought there has to be another chapter written and this cannot be the end of it. So here I am googled you page and found you on Facebook. I’m looking forward to reading your other publications more so desperate to know your happy ending. The book has helped me realise and understand some of my own feelings of my sad childhood. The only difference is that we are living in a modern world today and there are lot of government agencies which have raised more awareness. However, I believe there is always going to be a “Martha” somewhere sitting, crying and suffering. Sad.

  214. Flory Nkem January 29, 2013 at 10:10 pm #

I am an immigrant living in Dublin. Reading this first book- “Ma, he sold me for some cigarettes” broke my heart. I keep praying that God will heal all the wounds for Martha and her siblings especially Charlie.
I will definitely read the other books. it is indeed sad that this can happen in Europe. We had worse experience in Africa. The truth must be told. i salute your courage.

  215. amy wright January 31, 2013 at 10:33 am #

Hi I’m on to the 5th book ”ma av got mesel locked up in the mad house” when will the 6th book be available to buy and what’s its title?

    Dear Martha,
I am a 60 year old lady mother of 4 divorced catholic, I know how the Church has changed us I have a brother who has been molested by a Priest yet I still find myself still tied to the Church. I have read all but your last book I have cried and laughed and I admire your strength and determinationto just keep on going. I do hope you eventually caught up with your brother ,I also believe what goes around comes around so many good things will come your way.
My prayers are for you .

  217. Lyn Moffett February 24, 2013 at 4:39 am #

I have read the first instalment and only now finished the third. I came online to read up on Miss Long and just discovered there are a second and fourth edition. I will certainly buy the missing books. Although her life has had terrible beginnings she still maintains a terrific sense of humour and I actually laughed aloud at some of her sayings. I also feel that she shows such courage to and grit to overcome whatever life throws at her. Cant wait to read the other books and would be interested to know if there are any other books penned by her. Makes you take stock of your own home lifestyle and realise things could be worse for each and everyone of us,,, much much worse. I hope her final book brings her the life she truly deserves. . God bless.

Hi “Administrator”, I’ve already put my name down at the local book store for a copy of Martha’s upcoming publication and can hardly wait. I’ve read most of the comments above and was wondering whether Martha herself reads the support and outpouring of love from all of these people. It can’t erase the past unfortunately, but like a lot of these posters, I wish I knew her during her darkest moments but, not sure I would have survived what Martha has endured. It angers me that even the Catholic church couldn’t heal these abused children, they used them as servants and could not find compassion in their hearts to make children like Martha, feel loved and protected. Even after all this adversity, it seems that Martha will even find compassion towards the Jackser last days. What a story! I know I’ll have mixed feeling reading the next “chapter”.

Martha reads all of the comments on the website and Facebook although she doesn’t have time to respond to them personally. She does manage her own Twitter account if you would like to follow her there. Thank you very much for your comments. I know she would love to meet you if you can come to either of the events.

Dear Martha, I have just finished reading ‘Ma, He Sold Me For A Few Cigarettes’. I cannot begin to express my feelings upon reading your story. There were moments of laughter and happiness, but mainly of sadness, worry and anger. I gave birth to my first child last year, a little boy, who I would die for. I could not stop thinking of him whilst reading your story and for some reason, I kept thinking of him whenever Charlie was mentioned. My heart was breaking when I was reading your story, and every time something good happened to you I wished with all my heart that it would continue. I am so sorry that you had such a horrific experience, and for little Charlie as well, plus your other siblings who clearly were not looked after well at all. No-one deserves to be treated the way you all have been and I have the utmost admiration and respect for you – to fight your way out of the pit of despair and triumph evenutually (not that I have read any of your other books yet, but I am guessing you have triumphed in your own way). I wish you all the very best with your future and would love to meet you at the launch if I am able to make it. All the best wishes to Charlie and the rest of your family also. With love, Mala.

I have just finished Run, Lily, Run and absolutely loved it. I have no doubt there will be a sequel as we were left hanging, literally on a cliff! Can anyone tell me what the time frame might be for book # 2?
